Yes, Final Fantasy XIV is STILL Free
Back in October I reported that Final Fantasy XIV, an MMORPG released by Square Enix in September, had received a 30 day extension on its trial period. Now as we enter into the month of April, the game is…still free
The reasons given by Square Enix to why the game is still free is more than a little disheartening: they still haven’t figured out how to make it better. Current game producer Naoki Yoshida, in an interview with Gamasutra, had this to say:
“It was pretty much personally because I’ve been a player for so long. I wanted to make sure that I would only ask the player to pay for something once the team had established a firm plan for improvements
The reason we’re doing this is we’re showing the players, yes, it’s still costing us a lot of money, and we’re not getting that money back yet, but we’re serious about making these changes. This is one of the ways that we can show players that we are serious and we are taking it seriously.”
While their efforts are admirable, I’m not quite convinced that even once the game is “fixed” that gamers will be willing to crawl back, but only time will tell.
