Will “Apocalypse” Be the Best X-Men Movie Yet?

Since 2000, there have been five X-Men movies, not counting the ones that focused pretty exclusively on Wolverine. While most have been good or great, it is fair to say that others have screwed the pooch (X-Men: The Last Stand, I’m looking in your direction). But now a new film is coming out that could end up being the best of them all. Here are some reasons why:

Back to the Basics

While the more recent films concentrated mostly on a select group of mutants, in X-Men: Apocalypse, we will finally get to see more of the characters we all know and love, such as Cyclops, Storm, and Nightcrawler. In fact, Nightcrawler will be a big part of the latest installment. There’s a rumor that he will even provide some comic relief, which is quite a change from the dark and brooding character portrayed by Alan Cumming in X2. In addition, Apocalypse will feature other folks who have been under-represented in the X-Men movies, including Jubilee, Angel, and Psylocke.

Somebody Could Be Missing (But It’s a Good Thing)

For fans expecting to see Wolverine in X-Men: Apocalypse, there is some bad news: There’s a good chance he won’t be in this one. But this is actually good because it gives other characters a chance to shine. If you can’t get enough of Wolverine, don’t worry. There’s another film in the works slated for release next year, which is reportedly Hugh Jackman’s last with the character.

Finally a Great Villain

It can be argued that there hasn’t been a really great villain in an X-Men movie since Magneto in X2, but that will all change in the new film. Apocalypse is one of the X-Men’s greatest foes and he has his own interesting back-story. And unlike many of the previous movie villains, he isn’t a human set on destroying mutants. Apocalypse is just a badass mutant who wants to destroy pretty much everything.

There’s Bound to Be an Awesome Video Game

Though this doesn’t have a direct bearing on the movie, the video game that stems from it is important. Because of all the great new characters that will be in the film, an Apocalypse game could be amazing, but only if it’s done right. These days, you just never know what video games an X-Men character might show up in. Right now there’s even a roulette game that stars Wolverine alongside his Marvel cohorts, which include Spider-Man and Captain America.

A Focus on Comic Book Visuals

If you have seen any images from X-Men: Apocalypse or a trailer, you probably noticed how striking the colors and costumes are. “Olivia Munn’s Psylocke is a Jim Lee drawing come to life,” according to a piece on why this may be the best X-Men film ever. Unlike the muted tones in previous films, this one has put more of a focus on replicating comic book pages, which will make diehard fans very happy.

Bryan Singer is Back

If it seems like something went awry with the X-Men movies not directed by Bryan Singer, you’re not wrong. While First Class was mostly good, The Last Stand, as mentioned, was pretty awful. But with Mr. Singer back in charge, you just know Apocalypse is going to be good, if not great.
