What’s in a name? Apparently Activision’s balls
Yesterday Kotaku informed all of us that Activision had decided to put the words ‘Call of Duty’ back onto the Modern Warfare 2 box and promotional items. A spokesperson for Activision had this to say about it.
Infinity Ward’s Modern Warfare 2 is the direct sequel to Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare,” a spokesperson told Kotaku. “We have focused our attention on Modern Warfare in order to most effectively communicate the fact that this is the first true sequel in the Call of Duty series. Infinity Ward, the original creators of the Call of Duty franchise, has said from the beginning Modern Warfare 2 resides in the Call of Duty universe. This is reflected in the title’s package.
Funny part is that, according to Kotaku, everyone was informed of this through a tweet. Seriously Infinity Ward, a TWEET??? So this is what PR has come to, tweeting the announcements.
Obviously Activision was scared that brand awareness would drop too far without Call of Duty on the box. Yeah, like 3 words would affect the sales of probably the biggest shooter of the year. Seriously, for those of us that were going to buy it, the words Modern Warfare 2 was enough. But maybe Activision is trying to target that 30-45 females with 3 kids and a dog, a cat and a goldfish demographic. In which case, putting “Call of Duty” would probably help, since that’s the way they feel when their lazy, good-for-nothing husbands come home looking for some action.
