Viz Media is set to release a new special edition Princess Mononoke art book at the end of this month, complete with a new translation and aesthetically pleasing hard cover! Good news to soothe our souls from Studio Ghibli’s co-founder, Hayao Miyasaki’s retirement announcement early this month. (He might be serious this time!)

“We are very proud to expand our Studio Ghibli imprint with The Art of Princess Mononoke  and invite devoted fans and serious collectors to savor the gorgeous artwork and updated translation it features,” says Masumi Washington, Senior Editorial Director. “Princess Mononoke was a groundbreaking achievement for Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli and became the film that firmly established him on the international stage. The Art of Princess Mononoke is a beautiful testament to this creative visionary and his unique film.” – Viz Media

Studio Ghibli and Oscar-winning director Hayao Miyazaki have long produced some of the most gorgeous animated movies I’ve ever seen. Visually stimulating with flawlessly smooth animation, Ghibli appeals to everyone, even those who don’t care for animated movies. It was Princess Mononoke that really helped Ghibli break into mainstream America and into western media in the late nineties. A recipient of many awards, it’s easy to see why it’s one of the animation studio’s more popular productions.

Princess Mononoke is a action packed and fast-paced fantasy that centers around the struggle between the forest gods and the humans who plan to harvest the land for resources. A young prince becomes infected with a corruption curse from killing a rampaging boar god to protect his village. He must travel go find the land where the boar god came from and seek the Great Forest Spirit to cure him. On his journey he meets many lively and fantastic characters, including a girl, literally raised by wolves! With rich forest environments and colorful character designs, The Art of Princess Mononoke is sure to be chuck full of gorgeous goodies. Insightful interviews, concept sketches, character art and finished animation cels from the critically acclaimed fantasy action film, this is one art book your coffee table shouldn’t be without!
