I love anthology films, they’re one of my favorite sub-genre. I hate found footage films, with a few exceptions of course. So what happens when you mix the two? Well, of course you wind up with a mediocre, watch it once, and forget it film. I’m not trying to be a total downer, there are quite a few great scares in this film, and some good ideas. So what’s the problem? Well, it’s the waiting. The long boring set up for the scares. Also, the poor acting, the lame-ass dialogue, the shitty special effects, and the completely unfeasible plot.
So what we have here are five stories set inside a set-up story. The idea of the movie is you’re watching a VHS recording made by a group of degenerates.
The main story, Tape 59:
A group of guys record their accolades in a sexual assault, vandalism, and breaking and entering. While being paid (by an unknown party) to break into a house and steal a VHS tape, our group of degenerates comes across several disturbing videos that they decide to record onto their own camera while looking for the prized VHS. Of course they run into their own spookiness while rifling through this house.
Amateur Night: A group of guys video their sexual escapades with a hidden camera in a pair of glasses. After a night of partying, they bring a few girls back to a motel room and try to have their way with them. The only problem is that there is definitely something wrong with one of the girls.
Second Honeymoon: Starts off the slowest, but overall my favorite of the five (despite the awful acting.) A man and woman on a road trip find themselves being stalked by an odd woman.
The Sick Thing That Happened to Emily When She Was Younger: A woman who believes she is being haunted Skypes with her long distance boyfriend as paranormal activities take place. While something is definitely going on in her house, things aren’t quite what they seem. I liked this one, it’s entertaining and a close second to Second Honeymoon.
10/31/98: A group of friends go to a halloween party but find themselves in a predicament when they show up at the wrong house and bear witness to a bizarre ritual. Overall it’s got some cool moments, but a fair amount of lame ones as well.
Tuesday the 17th: My least favorite. Why? Well, looking at the title you can see its going to be a play on Friday the 13th. Some teens go in the woods, and are hunted down by a bizarre stalker. Overall a blah story and an awful to end this movie.
Watch this movie if you are in the mood for some found footage. I wouldn’t buy it, I wouldn’t pay a rental fee for it, but maybe put it in your queue.
Overall rating 5.5 out of 10
Also must mention that a sequel called SVHS is in production. My thoughts on this? Unnecessary, and unappealing.
