Your weekly fix for horror fans, whether you’re a noob, or a master of horror.

All these movies can be found on Netflix Instant Watch, and all are worth watching no matter your experience level.

So here are my recommendations!

Noob: So you’re new to the horror genre. Maybe you’re just curious. Either way, you haven’t seen many horror movies and you want to build up your list. Here’s a must see.

The Thing (1982)

No, this is not the “The Thing (2011),” which was technically a prequel. This movie is a remake of “The Thing From Another World (1951).” John Carpenter, arguably the greatest horror director of all time, helms this brilliant dark masterpiece. Set in Antarctica in the 80’s, a group of scientists and support staff at a research camp fall prey to an unseen menace. I wont give any of it away, but I will say this: if you haven’t seen this, watch it right now. Stop what you’re doing and watch this movie. You won’t regret it!

Overall Rating: 10 out of 10!

Intermediate: So you’ve seen a fair amount of horror. In fact, you are the horror guy among your group of friends. Well here are some picks for you.

My Bloody Valentine (1981)

One of my more favorite midnight movies from my childhood. No, this is not in 3D, (hell it’s barely even in 2D) but this movie is an eerie “who’s the killer?” creep fest. Miner’s masks are creepy, even more so are deranged miners with pick axes who like to leave Valentines (human hearts) as warning to try and stop a Valentines Day dance in the small town of Valentine Bluffs, Nova Scotia (yes this is a Canadian movie, but it’s ok, there’s a lot of blood.) This movie became such a classic, a popular band chose the title as their band name, and a few musicians have written songs with the same title.

Overall Rating: 7.5 out of 10 (definitely worth a watch)

Master: You’ve seen every horror movie worth a damn. You’re the guy your friends call around Halloween when they need the scariest horror movie ever made. You help them out even though they wind up with a copy of Paranormal Activity 3 and your undying hatred. Obviously you don’t need my recommendations ’cause you’ve seen it all, but here it is anyway on the chance one fell through the cracks!

Squirm (1976)

Ok, so the poster may be better than the actual movie, but I’m not saying it’s bad! This movie is definitely better in black and white. If fact, the director prefers you watch it that way; something he discovered late one night while watching it on TV. Now, this version on Netflix is obviously in color and unless you have amazing geek power, that is how you’ll watch it. Now don’t get me wrong! You should watch this movie about flesh eating worms that freak out, and attack a community after a electrical storm. Just give it a chance, as it might start a little slow, it really does pick up by the end, I promise!

Overall Rating: 6.5 out of 10

So there are my recommendations for you. Next week I’ll have three more. Enjoy these movies while you can, ’cause these often don’t stay streaming forever!
