Your weekly fix for horror fans, whether you’re a noob, or a master of horror.

All these movies can be found on Netflix Instant Watch, and all are worth watching no matter your experience level.

So here are my recommendations for Horror TV shows. I have some really great ones this week! All very watchable!

Noob: So you’re new to the horror genre. Maybe you’re just curious. Either way, you haven’t seen many horror movies and you want to build up your list. Here’s a must see.

American Horror Story (2011)

Evan Peters, Jessica Lange, Lily Rabe, Zachary Quinto, Sarah Paulson, Joseph Fiennes, Lizzie Brocheré, James Cromwell, Connie Britton, Dylan McDermott, Taissa Farmiga, Denis O’Hare, Frances Conroy, Kate Mara, Alexandra Breckenridge

I started watching this series with my wife when it first aired and after the first episode I quickly disregarded it as genre raping crap. Two weeks later my wife told me  that she had continued to watch it (against my expert opinion) and that I should give it another chance because she thought I’d like it. I gave it another chance, and I did like it. She wins this one. This show is dark, edgy, dramatic, and at some points, downright scary. Season 1 is about a hunted LA house filled with many ghosts and their back stories, but the main story centers around the Harmon family: a couple and their daughter who move from the east coast to escape some of their problems and rebuild their family. Little do they know, their new house is only going to add to their problems. This is an FX series, so it gets away with having a lot more violence than most, as well as butts, side boobs, and S-bombs! I picked this show for the noobs due to the simple fact that it’s still new, relevant, and the inclusion of drama will ease the hesitant into the horror genre.

Overall Rating: 7.5 out of 10!

Intermediate: So you’ve seen a fair amount of horror. In fact, you are the horror guy among your group of friends. Well here are some picks for you.
Amazing Stories (1985-1987)

I loved this show when I was a kid and still do to this day! Now, while all the stories may not be horror, they all have at least a bizarre twist to them much akin to The Twilight Zone and The Outer Limits. Some say this is just Steven Spielberg’s attempt to pay homage to these shows. Either way, this is a quality show with some decent scares and some great stories. Some might say amazing stories!

Episodes of note:

Go to the Head of the Class

Welcome to My Nightmare

The Family Dog

 The Mission

Overall Rating: 8.5 out of 10

Master: You’ve seen every horror movie worth a damn. You’re the guy your friends call around Halloween when they need the scariest horror movie ever made. You help them out even though they wind up with a copy of Paranormal Activity 3 and your undying hatred. Obviously you don’t need my recommendations ’cause you’ve seen it all, but here it is anyway on the chance one fell through the cracks!

Todd And the Book of Pure Evil (2010)

Alex House, Maggie Castle, Bill Turnbull, Melanie Leishman, Jason Mewes, Chris Leavins, Norman Yeung, Jillian Richings, Steve Arbuckle, Dan Petronijevic

Easily one of my new favorite TV shows ever! I’ve been non-stop watching this show every day this week. The dialogue  is effing hilarious and despite much real horror, there is a lot of reference to the horror genre. This show follows high schooler Todd Smith and his friends as they try to find the Book of Pure Evil while fighting the evil it causes in their bizarre school. This show feels a lot like Weird Science with added metal and gore. I chose this for the Master of Horror level because it’s not that well known, and easily passed by since at first glance it looks like B-movie crap. Now I know this is technically a Canadian TV show, but I chose to ignore that fact. My hatred of the great white menace to the north is dwindling more and more as I find hidden gems like this. Please take my advice and watch this show! No matter your level of horror watching abilities, give this one a try!

Overall Rating: 9.5 out of 10

So there are my recommendations for you. Next week I’ll have three more. Enjoy these movies while you can, ’cause these often don’t stay streaming forever!
