Okay, okay, so he’s not THE Batman…but he’s the hero the Congo needs!

Batwing #1: “The Cradle of Civilization”
Writer: Judd Winick
Penciler/Inker: Ben Oliver

There is a perfectly good reason to why Batwing looks eerily similar to the Dark Knight. Apparently, being the billionaire businessman that he is, Bruce Wayne went Pizza Hut on his hero persona and began franchising out his likeness around the world, forming a group called Batman Incorporated. Batwing, whose real persona is of police officer David Zavimbe, marks the first comic book series revolving around a Batman of African descent. Unlike Batman villains, who often steal and kidnap for monetary gain, Batwing’s adversaries seem downright genocidal in nature, which makes for seemingly higher stakes for our hero.

The artwork and writing on Batwing #1 sways a fine line between realistic and fantastical, and so beautiful matches the tone of the comic itself. Those squeamish to even the idea of blood might want to steer clear of this one, as the red stuff is in high supply in this debut issue. For everyone else, pick this one up. You won’t regret it!
