The Calling: Cthulhu Chronicles
BOOM! Comics has made a name for itself in the past five years (five!). Last year they snagged the Disney license (before the Marvel merger) and published what may have been the most talked about super-hero comic book of the year: Irredeemable.
Something you may not have noticed is that for they have also been steadily publishing Cthulhu comics. The Calling: Cthulhu Chronicles is the latest title.
The Calling features two writers: Michael Alan Nelson, a frequent BOOM! writer who wrote The Fall of Cthulhu and Johanna Stokes. The art is by Christopher Possenti. There are different covers: My vote is for the Sean Phillips’ version.
The biggest problem I had with the book was the art. It was only serviceable. However, I have to ask: Do you read Cthulhu books for the art? Or the story?
The story did not leave me with that constant creeping dead many experience the first time they read H.P. Lovecraft’s stories. The twist at the end did get me though. Also, as I was reading, I did find my wondering, what has happened in Paradise? You will too, but the question will change in your mind as you read.
After reading the first issue, I will give The Calling this praise: I want to read the second issue.
Bottom Line: $2.99/$3.99
