Strange Brews: The Dirty Martini

It’s been quite the long time since anyone here at MWN has decided to put up a drink recipe, this all changes today as I re-implement our regular feature ‘Strange Brews’ where we try out drink recipes we learn and share them with you, our loving audience.

So, let’s get started shall we?

The dirty martini has possibly the strangest ingredient added that gives it so much flavor, in fact it gets its name from the fact that you use the leftover briny suspension liquid from a canister of green olives (you know the stuff you usually throw away once the olives are eaten). What makes it dirty is that you replace quite a bit of vermouth with the olive juice when mixing.

Ok, so maybe these aren’t quite as uncommon as I like to think they are. The point being is that here in Utah, where all of our liquors at the bar are metered, we learn how to mix cocktails on our own dime. You either buy all the stuff to make them on your own or you pay too much for a drink that won’t have the proper ratio of alcohols. Either way, these are quite delicious.

    You’ll need:

  • 2 oz Gin or Vodka (I prefer Beefeater Gin)
  • 1 tbsp Dry Vermouth (Can be replaced with more Olive Juice)
  • 2 tbsp Olive Juice
  • 2+ Olives (2 being the minimum)

Grab your shaker, throw some ice in, pour in everything in except for the olives, give it a shake, strain/pour into a martini glass, drop your olives in, and then enjoy the magnificent flavors this martini incorporates.
