Star Citizen is a Crowdfunded Juggernaut
Chris Roberts, known primarily as the creator of the Wing Commander series has been working on a crowdfunded project that is equal parts first-person space flight/combat simulator, first-person shooter, and space trading and acquisitions. Think of it as EVE on a more personal level with less spreadsheets.
Well, the project has been in works for a while now ever since their successful Kickstarter netted them 400% of their original goal of $500,000 (that’s 2 million in funding) back in 2012. The game was simultaneously placed on their own Roberts Space Industries site for funding and it quickly reached an additional $4 million for a total of $6 million for initial funds.
Since then, the funding has continued through the game’s website to an astounding over $50 million dollars and it shows no signs of stopping. The game is making nearly $40,000 per day in crowdfunding but at the same time, they have started selling ships that people can use in the game for anywhere between $150 to $350 per ship. The most expensive one at $350 has sold over 560 of a total limited lineup of 5000 in just one weekend of sales. The amount of funding for this game is just simply staggering and I for one can’t wait for the finished product.
