Soldier Zero #6 – Review
In the latest issue of the Stan Lee helmed series, featuring writing from Dan Abnett & Andy Lanning and artwork from Javier Pena we find out who and what has been pursuing our unlikely hero…and he goes by the name Application Nine.
I don’t have a problem with this character in particular, but I do have to say that a character that fights using a smartphone looking device is something I never thought I’d ever see in a comic, much less actually think a pretty cool idea. I just wonder what the author’s idea of having the phone say what type of app its running during every scene of this issue.
The first few issues of this book fell rather flat for me, but now that it’s on issue #6 I can begin to see the book coming into its own. They just had to get that boring and all to stereotypical origin story and the awkward learning of powers thing out of the way.
The greatest thing this issue is the wondering whether or not App Nine is a good guy or bad guy. I mean, yes he essentially wants to remove Stuart from the Soldier Zero armor but mainly because he thinks Stuart doesn’t appreciate what he has…which is much nicer than what the government has planned for him.
I won’t give too much away but in this issue we get to see a few pages of what happens to exosuit wearing badasses when they are discovered by the gov’t, and it’s not good.
The artwork is great as always, Javier Pena nails some great action scenes and his drawing of one of the government clean up squads actually made me want to get another tattoo. The writing by Dan and Andy is particularly great this issue thanks to the internal dialogue Stuart gets into with his own suit.
All in all, this series is getting better and better each month and I’m actually at the point where I can’t wait to read the next in the series. Good job taking another place in my hold this month BOOM!
