Say hello to your new Jason Bourne, who won’t be Jason Bourne

Actually, I am OK with this one. Jeremy Renner has been asked to take over the lead roll of our modern day James Bond films, the Bourne franchise. The tricky thing is that Renner won’t be Jason Bourne

Jeremy Renner, whom you may know from Hurt Locker, Hawkeye in Thor/Avengers, and a bunch of other great movies, has been asked to take the lead role in the latest part of the Bourne franchise. Renner will be playing an as yet unnamed covert agent. Most likely someone who is hunting down Bourne, but from the news report… Jason Bourne won’t be in this film, even though Jason Bourne will be the subject.

Written and directed by Tony Gilroy(Michael Clayton), the film is not a reboot of the Bourne franchise; Renner would play a new character within the Bourne universe, an agent in a different covert government program than the one that ensnared and pursued Matt Damon’s Jason Bourne. While Damon will not appear in The Bourne Legacy, his character will be a presence in the new film as the title suggests.

Honestly, I am ok with this. Renner is a great actor, and while I always thought that Matt Damon did a damn fine job as Bourne in Bourne Identity, Bourne Supremacy, and Bourne Ultimatum, Damon was no longer the right guy for the job.

Renner, however, does bring something else to the screen. While still a handsome chap, his features seem a little more worldly than Damon’s soft face. Renner, looks the part of a man who has been through hell and back. Bourne Legacy will be the first of probably 3 addition movies. Legacy, Betrayal and Sanction. There are still 4 more books in the series, Deception, Objective, Dominion, and Upset, but I would imagine that after 3.

So a movie about a character who isn’t in the movie. Seem like an odd premise for a film to me, but I guess a good old fashion hunt can be fun to watch. We will see.
