RIP LucasArts: 1982-2013
Pour out a Grog for this prolific game company.
After 31 years in the game industry, LucasArts has shut down internal development, effectively dooming the company to a licensing its properties out to other developers. This sudden closure has resulted the cancellation of both Star Wars: First Assault and Star Wars 1313, unless another company shows interest in either title. Around 150 LucasArts employees have lost their jobs as a result.
LucasArts’ impact on the industry will not be forgotten, from pioneering the adventure game industry with the SCUMM engine (the technology behind The Secret of Monkey Island, Maniac Mansion, and Sam & Max Hit the Road to name a few) to its “actually good” film-licensed games. The last official title published by LucasArts was the critically luke-warm Kinect Star Wars.
We wish all the former LucasArts employees the best in their future endeavors.
