Oscars on Sunday, place your bets!
That’s right folks, it’s that time of year again where we all settle in to watch and see if our favorite won the prize. Of course, the big award is Best Picture, which has been recently expanded to a field of ten films from five. What also makes it interesting this year is that they’ve gone to a new voting system as well. Details after the jump.
In the past, the voting system was a simple most number of votes. But with the expanded field the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences decided to revamp the system. The voting system breaks down like this:
Members will choose their first, second, and third choices. Votes will be tallied. If no film has over 50% of the 1st place votes, then the film with the lowest first place votes will be dropped, and for those people who chose it, their second place vote will become their first place vote. This will continue until one film has the amount needed to win.
I actually like this idea. This could lead to an upset. Let’s go over an example. After round 1, Avatar has more first place votes than Inglorious Basterds, but not enough to win. The film with the lowest first place votes is dropped, and the votes of the people who had that film are rechecked, with the second place becoming the first place. Now imagine they overwhelmingly have Basterds in second place…..which is now their first place. You could see how this may shake the race up.
I’m interested to see the winner. I’ve seen quite a lot of guessing that Inglorious Basterds will pull off the upset, mainly due to the new voting system. Personally, Basterds or Blind Side would be my choice.
So out of the ten films vying, which do you feel should win the Best Picture? Let us know!
The Blind Side
The Hurt Locker
A Serious Man
