New Anime Releases for the Week of June 23, 2015

This week sees new anime releases from Eastern Star, FUNimation Entertainment, Sentai Filmworks, and VIZ Media.

Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro anime coverMy “Pick of the Week” goes to Eastern Star’s Blu-ray release of Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro, a film from the Lupin III franchise that was directed by Hayao Miyazaki.

In the twilight of his career, master thief Lupin the Third’s latest and greatest caper has hit a snag. What should’ve been bags of cash from a national casino turns out to be expert counterfeits. Together with his partner-in-crime Jigen, Lupin heads to the remote European nation of Cagliostro to exact revenge. Not everything goes as planned; the two encounter Clarisse, a royal damsel in distress being forced to marry the sinister Count Cagliostro against her will. Saving her won’t be easy, however, as Lupin and Jigen – together with Lupin’s unpredictable ex-girlfriend Fujiko and the swordsman Goemon – must fight their way through a trap-filled castle, a deadly dungeon, and an army of professional assassins.

A year has passed since Ichigo lost his Soul Reaper powers and resumed the life of a normal teenager. But those ordinary days come to an end when Ichigo meets a mysterious man named Kugo Ginjo, who offers to help him get his Soul Reaper powers back – and gives him only a day to decide. Ichigo is dead set against it, until Uryu is injured by an unknown attacker. Ichigo, powerless to help, turns to Ginjo and is introduced to the group Xcution, whose Fullbring powers Ichigo must face in battle if he ever hopes to get strong again.

It’s never easy to be a gentleman’s gentleman, but working for a girl who’s not only not a gentleman but also a lightning rod for trouble (and not always particularly ladylike either) is a job that few butlers could handle. For Hayate Ayasaki, however, fighting off teenage heiress Nagi Sanzenin’s would-be kidnappers is as much a part of butlering as serving the tea. Nor is that the only dangerous activity that Hayate’s bound to be asked to perform during the course of the average day. Need to nurse everyone through an illness? Then that’s part of Hayate’s job description. Got an embarrassing video that has to be retrieved before it hits the internet or need help returning stolen money? Hayate’s your manservant.

A young boy named Agito enters a forbidden sanctuary where a glowing machine resides. This machine preserves a young girl named Toola, who has a mission entrusted by her from the past. 300 years into the future, the Earth’s environment has been ruined by the interference of mankind, and in between the 300 years, the forest has come to life and is at constant war with man. It is an unsteady peace in an unnatural time. Only by searching their souls and examining the past will Toola and Agito realize the origin of all things and unite mankind with the forest.

Smile is finally learning to harness his natural talents, but can he squash his sympathy for his opponents enough to beat them?
