Last British WWI Veteran In Britain Dies
Sad news today as we learn that Harry Patch has died at the impressive age of 111. Patch was the last British WWI veteran who still lived in Britain, the other veteran being Claude Choules, 108, who is currently living in Australia. Patch didn’t want to join the army but was conscripted in 1917. He ended up fighting in the Battle of Passchendaele, or the Third Battle of Ypres. There are only 3 WWI veterans left now, Claude being one and John Babcock (109) of Canada and Frank Buckles (108) of America. It’s sad when another WWI veteran dies because it reminds us of the horror that The Great War was, practically wiping out a generation in the 4 years of conflict between the Triple Entente and the Triple Alliance. It’s cliche, but we should never forget.
