JK Rowling second-guesses pairing Hermione and Ron, fans explode.
Now it seems there are three camps of Harry Potter fans, pro Ron, anti-Ron, and those that couldn’t really care less about a two fictitious character’s relationship. I have my own opinions on the matter; if you have any attachment to these characters, it’s nearly impossible to have some form of opinion. My opinions here or your opinions don’t really matter. Well, they matter, but they only matter to the opinion holder. I suppose, I should, explain.
JK Rowling in an interview for Wonderland magazine said.
“I wrote the Hermione-Ron relationship as a form of wish fulfilment. That’s how it was conceived, really. For reasons that have very little to do with literature and far more to do with me clinging to the plot as I first imagined it, Hermione ended up with Ron. I know, I’m sorry, I can hear the rage and fury it might cause some fans, but if I’m absolutely honest, distance has given me perspective on that. It was a choice I made for very personal reasons, not for reasons of credibility. Am I breaking people’s hearts by saying this? I hope not.”
Should an author revise a published work, if they change their minds about something they wrote? Honestly, I should say no. Once published you have to let it go. You can have doubt; you can decide you should have made different choices. My experience as a writer has shown me that those thoughts and doubts never go away. At some point, you just have to let the work stand.
It should be noted that there is no sign that Rowling plans, or intends to revise her story. For the sake of argument, what if she did? Well first, I think it would be a mistake, but not for the reason some might think. To go back, and make a revision would signal to the world that this work was not complete. It would please some, but outrage others. Then we would have a generation of fans that remember a time when Ron shot first.
I’m not surprised Rowling holds the belief she made a mistake. These are her characters. To her, they are living breathing people. She stuck two of them together in a doomed relationship, and she knows it would result in months of relationship counseling, and a messy divorce. She is now a remorseful creator. Who are we to argue with her remorse? None of us, as familiar with Ron, Harry, and Hermione as we are, knows them like Rowling. Remember that you rabid fans, and remember it is a story. These are not real people.
Here is a sampling of what some have been posting.
“Well thanks Jo for kicking down 10 years of what I consider to be the most beautiful, unconditional & bare bones real relationship that could ever exist between 2 people, Ugh Jo… PLEASE, don’t re-write your own canon, it was perfect how it was.”
“Wait. WHAT???? NONONONONONO. I’m sorry Jo, but I could never EVER see Hermione with Harry. Ron is perfect for her, he balances out her Type A personality so well. And Ginny is perfect for Harry because she won’t let him sit around and mope about his lot in life … NO TAKE BACKS, JO.”
“Ever since I became attached to the Harry Potter universe I have always shipped for Harry/Hermione all the way. After that last monstrosity of a book came out I read the epilogue first and boy was I furious by what I saw. To all those people who have sneered, jeered, made fun of us for supporting Harry/Hermione and called us delusional I say this to you. We the ones who stood by the Harry/Hermione ship are now having the last laugh at you.”
“After 13 years of dealing with this shit… the author herself has finally come forward and admitted that she was wrong and we weren’t delusional to ship Harry and Hermione, we were right. So that’s what this is about. Validation. Knowing that no matter what ended up happening in the books and the movies we were fucking right.”
Since it seems inevitable now, let’s discus the relationship. Whom do you think Hermione would have wound up? Let’s get creative. First person to post a Hermione/Luna story wins.
