Production I.G. has announced recently that the fan favorite director Hiroyuki Okiura will be taking on directing duties for the upcoming anime “A Letter to Momo”. I am excite.

Okiura is probably best known for directing Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade from back in 1999 which was the last movie that he actually directed. Since then he’s worked on a few other films such as Cowboy Bebop: The Movie and Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence, but not as director.

The movie titled “A Letter to Momo (Momo e no Tegami)” will come out in 2012 and will be the story of a girl named Momo who grew up in a big city, but is forced to move with her mother back to their old family house on a remote island after the premature death of her father. On the island, time seems to have stopped in the past and all modern niceties aren’t available to young Momo.

What keeps her going while living in this antiquated island town is the unfinished letter that her father left her. The only two words on the letter that were written were “Dear Momo…”

In her new big house one day, she finds an old book and from that moment, unexpected things start happening…

The movie is, of course, being animated by Production I.G. and is easily up there with the new Miyazaki movie that’s being worked on. As more details arrive we’ll be sure to post them.
