I’ll admit, when I first heard a Goosebumps movie was in the works, I was skeptical. Movie adaptations of any book are hit and miss as it is, but a single film based on an entire series? Come on. Then I watched the trailers with my Goosebumps obsessed son. After seeing him “fankid” over the trailer; pointing out characters he recognized, developing plot theories, and laughing throughout—I’m in.  This looks like a movie kids will love especially if they are a fan of the books.

From my mature, worldly, adult perspective this looks like Cabin in the Woods for kids. The deal was sealed when I read Goosebumps author R.L. Stine’s interview about the film with The Source:

I’ve seen it. It’s really fun. It’s a great kids’ movie, and Jack Black…Jack and I are like twins. He is a very evil version of me, very sinister, and it has got a million monsters in it. All the monsters from the early Goosebumps books. They all come alive in the movie, it’s really fun.

Just take my money already!

After hearing that Stine might make an appearance in the film, I took a peek at the cast list on IMDB. So far, he is listed as playing himself which is interesting since Black is also playing him. Amid the monster chaos will there be two Stines? Maybe Stine will play an older version of himself. Or maybe the filmmakers want to surprise us and the credit is there to throw us off.

If you’re not familiar with the plot, the trailers will spell it out for you. And yes, you should watch both trailers since they have different footage. My only question, after watching Zack (David Minette) release The Abominable Snowman of Pasadena from a book, is how do all the other monsters get out? You’d think Zack would have learned his lesson after letting the first monster loose.  I’m not complaining, the more monsters the better, but I’m curious to see how this plays out.

Interestingly enough, this is not Minette’s first rodeo with R.L. Stine’s creations. The actor also starred in two episodes of R.L. Stine’s The Haunting Hour now streaming on Netflix.

According to iHorrorGoosebumps will be in 3D so, prepare to see the Shocker of Shock Street coming right for you. iHorror also put up a gallery of a few of the monsters from the film. I was excited to see The Haunted Mask in the line-up.

Goosebumps hits theaters October 16, 2015 (just in time for Halloween). Watch the trailers and then leave a comment and let me know what you think.
