Slight Spoilers Ahoy!
What happens when you find a boat in the middle of a still ocean after getting really, really drunk? Oh, there is someone in it and they have shackles on their legs? Oh, and your mystic spent a long time in a dream state saying The Death over and over? You tow it behind you. Probably not the best decision Conan and Belit have made after they’ve become the most feared entity in the ocean.
I’m not positive, because this is one of the Robert E Howard stories that I haven’t read, but it seems like this might be the beginning of the end for Conan and his life as a pirate. Not just a pirate, but the essential King of the Western Ocean. When Belit is absolutely terrified of the apparent unknown that is approaching and dives into the passions of sex with Conan to try and escape, you know things are not going to turn out well.
When Conan wakes up, finds the guy in the boat they were towing covered in blood and dead, his crew starting to take on a sickness and just pulling into port? Yeah, the timing is great. How Conan doesn’t seem effected might get some kind of explanation, unless being raised in Cimmeria makes you immune to some diseases, really, it wouldn’t surprise me. I can’t wait to see what’s in store next for my favorite Cimmerian, I love Brian Woods adaption of Howard’s work, and the art isn’t pretty, but it’s not supposed to be pretty, it’s frigging Conan. It’s gritty in all it’s glory. You’re really missing out if you consider yourself a Conan fan.
