Coming from a guy who was a serious PC gamer in the late 80s to the mid-90s, I have a real soft spot in my heart for anything Wing Commander related…yes even the horrible Matthew Lillard movie with gerbil themed Kilrathi.

I mean, there was probably no better space fighter simulator on the PC for me than Wing Commander, the game had it all: a very compelling story, detailed characters, romance, and cut-scenes that really brought you into the world. I’m not even talking Wing Commander 3 which had frakking Mark Hamill, John Rhys Davies, Tim Curry, Tom Wilson (Biff from Back to the Future), Malcom McDowell, and Josh Lucas (from American Psycho) all playing roles in FMV scenes. I’m not even joking when I say that the Wing Commander series is perhaps my favorite PC game series ever created.

I could remember the times when I’d take print outs of the ship schematics for the various fighter craft to school with me to study them, this wasn’t even just the human ships, but the Kilrathi too (what a great enemy by the way, evil space tigers set on conquering the human race). I’d study the weaponry so I would know which missile would work best against a certain enemy, which gun would prove most effective on a Dralthi…I was obsessed.

Then, the XBLA game came out and I started to hate what the series had become. It was no longer the sim that I fell in love with, it didn’t have the same draw as the first 3 or 4 of the games that established the entire universe. Hell, even Privateer was pretty good.

That hopefully changes forever today. I caught a little glimmer of hope in seeing that EA has applied for a trademark for Wing Commander. If anyone can bring that series out of the toilet, I’m hoping it would be EA, they don’t usually make shit games out of legacy IPs…just mediocre ones at worst.

What say you all, anyone else think that bringing back the old IPs is a good idea? Shit, I’d even love to see a direct port of the first 2 games + the secret missions. It’d be worth a $60 purchase for me.
