Double Fine Puts New Adventure Game on Kickstarter
A chance to have a new adventure game by pioneers of the genre? Here, have handfuls of my money!
Double Fine has decided to put the fate of their latest title, codenamed Double Fine Adventure, in the hands of the fans via crowdfunding website Kickstarter. This marks the company’s first attempt to nix the need for a publisher, and they’ve brought Ron Gilbert, whom Tim Schafer worked with on Maniac Mansion and the first two Monkey Island games. Documenting the entire process will be 2 Player Productions (Reformat the Planet), who will release a multi-part series spanning the entire brainstorming and development process of the new game to the project backers.
At the time of this post, the project is already more than funded, with $863,569 pledged, more than double its $400,000 goal and 33 days to go. Even with this knowledge, I had no trouble contributing to the cause. The project is also currently a PC-only, Steam-distributed affair, but with more money to work with the company might be able to expand that release to include Mac, Linux, and even portable platforms.
A $15 minimum contribution is required to receive a copy of the game, but great prizes await for those who throw even more money in their direction, including original artwork from the game, autographed posters, and even lunch with Tim and Ron (easiest $10,000 I’ve
ever spent wished I spent)
