Not for hunks.

The episodes

A spin-off of the 5-season “like it or hate it” Adult Swim show Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!, Check It Out! with Dr. Steve Brule sees the return of the titular doctor (played by Academy Award nominee and starring voice talent of the upcoming Wreck-It Ralph John C. Reilly) as he is given his own educational news program on Channel 5.

If you were not a fan of Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim’s absurd approach to comedy, then Check It Out! is very unlikely to change your mind. Like previous efforts, the show is packed to the brim with some of the strangest people that the duo could find off the streets, quite the impressive feat figuring each of its 12 episodes barely clock in at over 11 minutes. That’s right, you can watch the entire two seasons on this DVD in just over 2 hours.

Video quality

Check It Out! looks like it has been gathering dust in a tape library of a public access television station, but this is all part of the show’s aesthetic. In an age where Blu-ray releases are becoming more and more common, Check It Out sits proudly as a DVD-only release, begging for a 3am viewing.

The extras

For a show that spans only 12 episodes, Check It Out! with Dr. Steve Brule boasts an impressive assortment of deleted scenes and extended segments, a likely result of the show’s short runtime and guerrilla improvisation format. Many of these scenes are of the same caliber of the content that actually made it to air, so fans will more than get their money’s worth on these alone.

It’s a pity, however, that the DVD doesn’t include any commentary track, which was included in the first season DVD release of Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!, but sorely missed in any subsequent releases. Perhaps the reason behind the insane logic of the show is better left unsaid.

Closing thoughts

Check It Out! with Dr. Steve Brule is not for everyone…hell, it’s not for most people. However, if you are willing to keep an open mind in the surreal world that Tim, Eric, and John have painted together, you’re going to have an absolute blast.

Just buy it, ya dingus!

…for your health!
