Who are these “Myspace” people?

Apparently there was a social networking site that was super duper huge before Facebook claimed the realm. I kinda remember it, but I’m not sure if it is just my brain trying to block out a bad period in my life or not.

If you remember the time before there was a Facebook, everyone had a Myspace page. Usually it had a whole bunch of dumb animated .gif images or flash videos. Some peoples played a song when you went to their page. It was all very, very annoying. Anywho, those guys, they just laid off 500 people, or 47% of their staff.

“Today’s tough but necessary changes were taken in order to provide the company with a clear path for sustained growth and profitability,” CEO Mike Jones said in a written statement. “These changes were purely driven by issues related to our legacy business, and in no way reflect the performance of the new product.”

In other words, he’s basically saying that Facebook is slaughtering them, and no amount of shitty wannabe indie bands who start a myspace page is going to save the company.

RIP MYSPACE, maybe you had fun while it lasted, hopefully the $580 million in cash Newscorp paid to you guys at your prime wasn’t all spent on hookers and blow.

Keep an eye out Facebook, this could easily be you in 5 years, all it takes is the next ‘new thing’ and people will discard you faster than Mark Zuckerberg can run in his dumb flip flops. A horrible analogy, I know, I’m tired.
