First, keep in mind that AMC is a cable channel not a broadcast channel that you can pick up via antenna. Second, the numbers provided are for both the first viewing and subsequent views of the first episode of the new season.

The return of the zombie filled TV series on AMC garnered an astounding 7.3 MILLION viewers on it’s opening night. That’s a big effing number. If you took the cumulative number across all three broadcasts, the number magically jumps to 11 million viewers (which is a massive number for any show on cable).

AMC didn’t want to waste any time with a press release about how their original show got “the strongest telecast for any drama in basic cable history”. I’d be proud too, though I’m concerned with how sharply that number will fall when the budget lean episodes start around episode six for this season…cause that’s right about the time they lost Darabont as well.

Still, not to piss in their cornflakes, this show is excellent and I’ll keep watching it as long as it’s on the air.
