SCEA boss Jack Tretton wants all of you to lay off of Sony. He stated in a recent interview that he thinks that the PS3 is on the “right path for long term.” If you couldn’t hear that noise, that was the collective sighs of about 80 million gamers still clutching their PS2s waiting for the current system to come down a bit in price.

“People are having short-term thinking – the platform is not even three years old. It was USD 599; it’s now USD 399. The focus on pricing is something we appreciate, but you have to have the conviction and the confidence that you are on the right path for the long term and ultimately you’ll get all the consumers you want. You won’t get them all day one, but we’re looking to get them over a 10-year period. It’s going to take different things to get different consumers.”

“We want the platform to be successful, we want to be profitable. But it is getting harder to measure that, and when you get down to a game like The Last Guardian, you can’t just look at the number of units it sold versus it’s development cost; it’s what did you do to drive our message of diversity.”

Hate to tell you Jack, but all one has to do is look at the Wii and the constantly sinking price of the Xbox 360 to know that the lower the price point for a console, the more people buy them. I got my PS3 when it was still in the ‘OMFG that’s expensive’ phase (thanks to a certain craps table @ The Mirage in Vegas), but I still can understand how most people think that having the PS3 is more of a luxury console.

I also understand that Sony is losing a bunch of money on each PS3 sold in the hopes that accessories and games will recover some of that cost, so a futher deep cut into the price would cause even more suffering for the company…but I think HE’S guilty of thinking in the short-term.

If Sony would drop the price, that would be more people adopting Blu-ray, more people on PSN renting movies and buying games, and even more people established on a console which would draw more third-party developers toward making PS3 exclusive titles.

He can keep talking though because Sony will be set to claim the current gen crown as soon as Microsoft decides to work on their next version of the Xbox. Only then, will things get very interesting. It’s a great time to be a gamer don’t you think?
