This Is Bullshit Sega
In case you haven’t heard, today Sega announced the Sega Mega Drive Ultimate Collection for the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. According to the ever-so informative press release that was sent out, the game “will feature the best first-party games from SEGA’s respected 16-bit Mega Drive years, as well as bonus content from its 8-bit Master System and 1980’s arcade era games library.” Sound familiar? It should cause there’s these games called Sega Genesis Collection and Sonic Mega Collection Plus, and guess what? They all have lots of Sega games in them! So, since the Sega Mega Drive Ultimate Collection is on the current-gen systems it must blow those other games out of the water right? Um, not really… Take a look at the list below, and then I’ll explain what you’re looking at.
That is a list of the announced games on SMDUC. The games that are crossed out are games that were already on Sega Genesis Collection. If you also own Sonic Mega Collection Plus then you can also go ahead and cross out the 5 extra Sonic games. Not only this, but Ecco Jr. and Sword of Vermillion were in the Sega Genesis Collection and have been removed for this collection. Those two are admittedly probably not worth putting on the disc, but still, it’s missing content.
So what is new to make you want to buy this game? Well, there’s the Shining series, the Streets of Rage series, Beyond Oasis, Dynamite Headdy, and a few others. While those games are amazing, especially the SoR series and Dynamite Headdy (which is seriously one of the best games that came out on the Sega Genesis), if you already own the Sega compilations for Playstation 2, which you should, those are probably not reason enough to rebuy a collection which you’ve for the most part already bought. There’s also the fact that the new games can be played in 720p, but it’s really not true HD. As you can see in the picture above, Sonic looks blurry as fuck, and that is not very appealing to me.
Sega, I’m calling you out. If this is really an “ultimate collection”, put it all on the table. I’m not even talking about Sega produced games, I’m talking about Sega developed titles that they’re holding out on us. Give us Gunstar Heroes, give us the Wonder Boy series, the Toe Jam & Earl series, and Michael Jackson’s Moonwalker. (Just kidding…or am I?) Then maybe try to finagle us some great Genesis games that weren’t developed by Sega. This is called the Sega Master Drive Ultimate Collection, not the Sega Made These Games Collection.
Whatever you do Sega, drop the shenanigans of the fact that you are selling us the same games over and over. Hell, I’ll buy old retro games even if I own the carts, I love having different mediums of my favorite old games, but do I really need to be able to play Sonic 2 on Sega Genesis Collection, Sonic Mega Collection Plus, and now the Sega Mega Drive Ultimate Collection? Give me something new to sink my teeth in, not more of the same.
