Colin Meloy, the lead singer of The Decemberists, announced last night that their forthcoming LP has been dated and named. The album, titled The King is Dead, is said to be somewhat inspired by longtime college rock band R.E.M. and even features the band’s guitarist, Peter Buck, on a few tracks. Despite the band’s 2006 jump from indie label Kill Rock Stars to mainstream label Capitol Records, their albums have not suffered in content and heart as a result.

The King is Dead comes out on January 18, 2011, but you can get a taste of the new album with “Down by the Water”, which features the vocals of bluegrass artist Gillian Welch, available as a free download below.
