The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Extended Edition is Finally on Its Way
After The Fellowship of the Ring received an Extended Edition release many months after the initial home release, fans have learned the value of waiting it out. I’m happy to report that Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has finally unveiled the version of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey that you have all been waiting for.
The Extended Edition home release, which comes in 3-disc Blu-ray/Ultraviolet, 5-disc 3D Blu-ray/Blu-ray/Ultraviolet, and 5-disc DVD/Ultraviolet flavors will hit store shelves on November 5th. Unlike previous The Lord of the Rings Extended Editions, fans will only receive 13 additional minutes of footage (for comparison, The Fellowship of the Ring had 30 minutes, The Two Towers had 43 minutes, and The Return of the King pushed the scales at 63 additional minutes), but the additional discs are packed with over 9 hours of additional bonus features, including a full-length commentary from Peter Jackson and co-writer Philippa Boyens, a 14-part chronological history of the filming of An Unexpected Journey, and all the backstory, conceptualization, and special effects design that you’ve grown to expect from these releases.
Just don’t spend too much time in the special features, as The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug comes out December 13th.
