In some awesome news, Valve has managed to raise over $300,000 for the American Red Cross’s Japanese relief fund through the Team Fortress 2 community buying virtual hats. The promotion isn’t over however until April 6th so if you want to donate to Japan and get yourself some virtual hat loving at the same time, here’s how.

Valve are currently selling three different hats in their TF2 store, Mann Co. There is the “Humanitarian’s Hachimaki” ($7.99), the “Benefactor’s Kanmuri” ($19.99) and finally, for those feeling particularly generous, “Magnanimous Monarch” ($99.99).

The hats are unique in that they will never be available again after April 6th and they cannot be traded or crafted in Team Fortress 2. I mean they’re still virtual hats, but it’s a nice way to help the relief effort in Japan anyway. As Valve quite rightly say in their blog post, the fact that the players of Team Fortress 2 have raised over $300,000 through this is proof if anything that gamers can be incredibly awesome and generous. Good show.
