Oldie But Goodie – The Black Hole

by under FEATURED on Dec 13th
Welcome to the inaugural helping of WPR’s newest feature article, Oldie But Goodie! My intent here is to share great things that came into existence before I ever did. Seeing how I was born in the first month of 1980, that leaves me the entirety of iniquity to 1979 to discuss things that you too should love. This week, I’ve decided to go with the Disney’s classic The Black Hole, a movie that I love and hate relationship...

Morning Cup o’ Music

by under READ on Nov 28th
It takes serious balls to say that you’re starting a band that covers nothing but old video game music and there are very few groups that do it right. This week, I hope to share a few that I listen to on a regular basis and get you to appreciate how awesome the world of gaming music really is.

PAX 2011: Fez Impressions

by under PLAY on Aug 28th
I was very excited to finally get my hands on Fez. It’s been in development for over three years now, and it seems like it will be worth the wait.

Syndicate Reboot at Gamescom?

by under PLAY on Aug 11th
The staff at Starbreeze Studios (The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay, The Darkness) are working on a secret game for some time now…years even, that hasn’t been given an official title yet except for the secretive ‘Project Redlime’ codename.

Pac-Man Highway Gives Me The Willies

by under WATCH on Jul 3rd
I don’t quite know why, but as a kid I used to get easily scared by the ghosts in Pac-Man. I’m sure kids in the current generation aren’t scared quite so simply…considering what they have on TV and movies these days, but watching this video just reminded me how creepy the ghosts are in Pac-Man.

Weekend Warrior Video Time: RetroTech

by under WATCH on May 7th
Since we all don’t have a lot to do at this time of night other than play games, and just surf around the interwebs, I thought I’d at least make you park your face here for a couple of minutes.

Found Scrapped Thundercats Movie Footage

by under WATCH on Feb 28th
Sorry for the crappy quality but you can’t really expect GREAT footage from something that isn’t supposed to exist.

You Don’t Know Jack – Review

by under PLAY on Feb 28th
After a losing bout with relative obscurity, Jellyvision has taken the limelight again with a series reboot of their infamous franchise on every game console known to man. It has to have been at least 10 years since the last time I played a You Don’t Know Jack game. It came on a CD-Rom and the video chugged because my computer was ancient even by those day’s standards. YDKJ for Xbox 360 is obviously a step...

Thundercats Anime – Trailer

by under WATCH on Feb 28th
I know what you’re saying to yourselves right now…did this show really need to get a remake?!? Yes, yes it did, because the original show was groan inducing drivel. Yeah. I said it.

OLD =/= BAD

by under FEATURED, READ on Dec 8th
How many people here still watch movies from when they were kids? A lot of you? A few of you? Doesn’t really matter for this piece because I simply want to put you all into the way-back machine to blow the lid off of this current trend of hating on old media simply because it’s not new. I hear on a weekly basis that game x hasn’t held up very well and how movie y looks dated, or what have you and I can’t...

Ron Gilbert Joins Double Fine

by under PLAY on Sep 27th
We were already in love with Double Fine Studios when it was just Tim Schafer, but today we were given an early Xmas present by finding out that Ron Gilbert has joined the crew over at Double Fine. In case you’ve lived in a hole during the PC era of gaming where it was the only option, you should know why this is a distinctive news item. You see, one of the best games to ever grace the PC was the SCUMM powered...

Metal Gear Remake…Maybe?

by under PLAY on Sep 29th
Kojima had an interview with Kotaku recently about many things, but the one thing that many of us gaming whores are picking up on is the statement he had about doing a remake of the original Metal Gear, which appeared on the MSX2 waaay back in 1987 when I was a mere lad of seven.

Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet – Trailer

by under PLAY on Jul 21st
Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet is an old fashioned side scrolling shooter created by Michael Gagné.  The trailer for the game looks stunning, I love the retro aesthetic of the game and some of that gameplay featured in the trailer looks intense, I hope we won’t have to wait too long to get our hands on a demo or even the full game, it looks like it could be one of the indie hits of the year.

Review – Broken Sword: Shadow of the Templars (DS)

by under PLAY, READ on May 8th
The Broken Sword series used to be a massively popular point and click adventure series released on the PC in the 90′s before the point and click point and click genre slowly died out. Various ports, updates and sequels have been made over the years on the Game Boy Advance, Palm OS and the Playstation and now the original game, Shadow of the Templars has been updated for the Wii and the DS.

Games That Defined Me — Einhander

by under PLAY on Mar 12th
There was a time, believe it or not, when Square Soft was known for making quality games and releasing brand new role-playing games here in America. Their name stood for quality games, and not the tarnished company they have become. Nobody will deny the awesomeness that was Square during the SNES period, nobody! This trend thankfully continued into the 32-bit generation when Square started to branch off into other genres...

Hey I Buy Used Games Too!

by under PLAY on Mar 9th
I know this is completely out of left-field, but there are times that I think that I should start my own used game service. It seems to be the cool thing for companies to do these days. Just take a look at Amazon for instance. Just this last week they decided that they’re going to start buying used games or should I say that they’ll eventually determine if your game is worth trading in and the subsequent...

I’ve Become One of THOSE People…

by under Uncategorized on Mar 2nd
As I was doing some heavy thinking this weekend, you know the kind of heavy thinking that takes 30 minutes and allows you to read a few chapters of a book or get the high score in Tetris, and I realized that my brand of retro-snobbery is akin to the same cleft-assholed guys that prefer to hear things on vinyl instead of mp3 or CD. What got me thinking about this comparison is the pipe-dream that I’ve always had...

Megaman for a Megaworkout

by under PLAY on Nov 7th
I got to the gym today and started a circuit around all the different machines and weights, when what should come on my mp3 player but the Concrete Man stage music from Megaman 9. Let me tell you I have not felt this compelled to push myself in a LONG time, but somehow this track got it out of me. I set the entire OST to loop and carried on with my workout and according to the computer system they use on all the machines...
