From the Comic Hold: A bunch of comics from Dark Horse

by under READ on Apr 14th
I’ll just straight up admit it, I find myself giving more attention to the comics that Dark Horse puts out than any other. This past week I read the new Star Wars #4, The Massive #10, Sledgehammer 44 #2 and X #0.

Before you sigh and roll your eyes about another WW2, robots and Nazi shenanigans of Mignola and Dark Horse just give this first issue a shot at least.

Hellboy: The Fury #3 Review – Wow

by under READ on Aug 11th
So I just finished reading through all three issues of Dark Horse’s Hellboy: The Fury and it was impressive. The story feels very simple and straightforward, basically you have Hellboy fighting Nimue, an ancient sorceress, to save humanity (okay, maybe that doesn’t sound real simple but it feels like it). One of the great things about this fight is it is just pure unadulterated Hellboy pounding on Nimue and...

Greg Sez #18 – Comics You Should Be Reading This Week

by under FEATURED on Mar 6th
Hi and welcome to another edition of Greg Sez. This is the special holofoil, die-cut, chromium Emerald City Comicon edition. What does that mean for you? Nothing. Just that by the time you read this, I’ll already be back from Seattle, hopefully with some good scoops for WatchPlayRead! Anyhow, let’s get started here. Dynamite Comics Garth Ennis’ female Punisher with a sense of humor continues this week with Jennifer...

Comic Review, Hellboy: Double Feature of Evil

by under READ on Nov 17th
I love the Hellboy one shots! I love the big story arcs too, but its nice to get a break from them every once in a while and do something small and self contained. What could be better than a Mike Mignola Hellboy one shot? Well for starters this is a double feature, and it is drawn by Richard Corben (yes, that Richard Corben!) making his fifth visit to the Hellboy universe! Because I’m writing this, and that means you...

Comic Review: BPRD Hell on Earth New World #4

by under READ on Nov 11th
An open letter to Mike Mignola Dear Mike, Today I read the latest installment of BPRD. I just wanted to thank you for writing a comic that I need to read, and that I look forward to every month. After I pick up an issue I cannot wait for the next one to come out. How you keep the various series that you write fresh and exciting just astounds me. The thing that I enjoy most is that even after all the comics of yours...

Comic Reviews: Hellboy Beasts of Burden

by under READ on Oct 28th
I love a good one shot! Occasionally it’s nice to have a self contained story that doesn’t leave you scrambling for crossovers and back issues, or pining for next month’s issue. The catch is that you never know what you are going to get with a Hellboy one shot. The last one shot was about Mexican Luchadores, this issue is a cross over with Evan Dorkin’s “Beasts of Burden.” This issue is written by Mike Mignola...

Baltimore the Plague Ships #3 (of 5)

by under READ on Oct 7th
The previous issue takes place on a boat as “our hero” sails after his foe, he gives Vanessa(and us) back story as to why he- Lord Baltimore- is hunting vampires. As this issue opens their ship is floundering in a storm, and eventually capsizes. Baltimore and Vanessa are washed ashore on an island ominously referred to as The Furiani Graveyard. As they explore the island further they discover several capsized submarines...

BPRD Hell on Earth New World #2

by under READ on Sep 10th
Mignola is killing me! Something big seems to be coming in the Hellboy universe. Depending on how you look at what is happening, the story could affect every Hellboy associated book. The problem we have is that all we’re getting are more and more puzzle pieces. We can’t even begin to see how they will fit together or even if they will fit together. This is all building toward something, but I have no idea what that...

Hellboy: The Storm #3

by under READ on Sep 4th
And with this, the third issue, Hellboy:  The Storm is over. After the six issues of Darkness Calls and the eight issues of Wild Hunt, the three issues of The Storm seems rather small.  Upon reading the stories, the name reminds me of the phrase “The calm before the storm.”  After all, it appears the storm is coming, and Hellboy will undoubtedly be in the center of it.

Baltimore: The Plague Ships #2

by under READ on Sep 1st
In the first issue Lord Baltimore rolls into town and begins cleaning up the place almost like Clint Eastwood in a “Man with no Name” movie. We know very little about him and why he hunts vampires. Issue two picks up right where issue one leaves off, he is released from prison and is aboard a boat following his vampire foe. Once he is aboard he finally has some down time from the action that began in the first issue....

BPRD: Hell on Earth: New World #1

by under READ on Aug 11th
Yes, this book really does have three titles.  The main title is BPRD.  The secondary title is Hell on Earth.  The third title (that will go on the next four books  after this as well (it is a five part mini-series)) is New World. Did you get all that?  Good.  Did you buy it yet?

Hellboy: The Storm #2 (of 3)

by under READ on Aug 4th
I-so-want-to-share-the-news-with-you-but-I-hate-spoilers! Actually, I am not even certain about a certain something in particular that I caught in Hellboy: The Storm #2, and I really want to talk about it with someone!  However, I won’t do it here.

Baltimore: The Plague Ships #1 (of 5)

by under READ on Aug 4th
In Baltimore:  The Plague Ships, Dark Horse Comics would like you to introduce you to Lord Henry Baltimore.  World War I has just ended, but for Lord Baltimore, the war continues as he hunts vampires. Baltimore was originally conceived by Mike Mignola (Hellboy) and fleshed out with the help of writer Christopher Golden (too numerous books and comic books to mention here).

Abe Sapien: The Abyssal Plain #2

Abe Sapien:  The Abyssal Plain #2 did not end like I expected it would; not in the least. That is among the highest praise I can give, I believe.

Hellboy: The Storm #1

by under READ on Jul 8th
Has it really been more than half a year since the last issue of Hellboy: The Wild Hunt?  With the great BRPD comics going at the same time, sometimes I do not notice I don’t have a new Hellboy comic around. However, once I got Hellboy: The Storm #1 in my hands, I was a very, very happy camper.
