Sometimes word of mouth can really piss me off. Word of mouth told me I should look out for Sweets. Word of mouth had me read the ten page preview Image sent me. Word of mouth got to me too late to pick up Sweets #1 before my comic book store ran out.
Thanks word of mouth. Thanks mainly because I have yet another comic book to buy and read.
Sweets is the brainchild of Kody Chamberlain (30 Days of Night: Bloodsucker Tales). Mr. Chamberlain is writing and drawing this five issue miniseries.
Sweets is a noir story that takes places in New Olreans. The main character is New Orelans detective, Curt Delatte. In true noir style, he has his own baggage that he is carrying around while trying to track down a killer who leaves pralines at his murder sites. In addition, Mr. Chamberlain has thrown in a colorful cast of characters, police, politicians, and prostitutes (the great 3 P’s of noir stories).
Mr. Chamberlain’s art fits his story. The air seems muggy in the pictures, the oranges scream summer heat. Each character is uniquely drawn.
If you have trouble finding the first issue as I did, remember this title when I review the fifth issue: I will probably be suggesting that you look for the collected trade. If you can find Sweets #1, at 2.99, it is a sweet deal. (Sorry, I couldn’t resist.)
Bottom Line: $2.99/$2.99
