Supermax Rumours Start Up Again
Supermax is the long rumoured Green Arrow movie which has been delayed and put on hold countless times since it was announced a couple of years ago. David Goyer is producing and created the concept for the film. If you don’t already know Goyer has previously has written a number of superhero properties including Batman Begins, The Dark Knight and the Blade trilogy so he’s kind of a big deal when it comes to these comic book adaptations.
The idea behind Supermax is as ambitious as it is awesome, Green Arrow is imprisoned for a crime he didn’t commit and he is put away in a prison designed for super villains and he has to break out whilst attempting to take them all on. This last part is the most interesting because Goyer has stated that he plans for a lot of b and c list villains from all of the DC universe to appear in the film alongside some of the more prominent villains including Lex Luthor and the Joker.
It certainly sounds like an original idea and one that DC can pull off well because they are owned wholly by DC who have the rights to all of their characters so it’s quite easy for them to put Superman villains in a Green Arrow film and I’d love to see exactly what a superhero prison break film would look like.
There have been a number of rumours about the film including Matt Damon playing the Green Arrow, Kevin Smith directing the film and exactly which super villains would be appearing in the film. The latest rumour is that they have brought a new writer onto the project to finish the project because in the words of Goyer “Warner Bros. is now heavily into mining all of the various DC properties.” There’s no word on who the writer is although I’m guessing it’s going to be somebody with previous ties to the comic book genre, if Kevin Smith wasn’t knee deep in filming A Couple of Dicks I would have said it was him, after all he did an amazing Green Arrow comic series Quiver which was a big hit with Green Arrow fans.
Hopefully they’ll let Goyer do what he likes with with the project, it certainly sounds like one of the more interesting superhero projects currently in development.
