Star Wars: The Old Republic – Expect Delays
For those of you out there in the audience that were hoping to get your grubby little digits on Bioware’s MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic this year…sorry, not happening.
EA has confirmed that the MMO will NOT be making it during this fiscal year (2010) or throughout most of the next fiscal year (2011). That’s right, all of you Star Wars whores will be waiting for at least a whole year, perhaps two years, to play this game on the open market. I’m sure there will be all sorts of closed betas leading up to it, but it won’t see a retail version for quite some time.
Now the good news, the reason that they’re putting so much development time into this game is that they want it to be a quality product that will be around for some time to come, and with that aging whore of an MMO, World of Warcraft, sticking it out to the living end, a major IP like the Star Wars Universe could be just the replacement we all need to put Blizzard’s dog down for good.
When making an MMO, costs can exponentially grow over that of a normal title that would be released, but the rewards can also be much greater. Just think about how much someone who’s played WoW with 3 accounts has spent over the life of that title. That’s exponentially more than that person would ever spend on a regular title.
EA and BioWare definitely know what the hell they’re doing.
