Unless you’ve been wasting away on a moisture farm on Tatooine or buried in a garbage compactor on a space station somewhere in a galaxy far, far away, you’ve heard the latest news. Disney and Star Wars announced details regarding the second film in the much anticipated anthology series. It will be film about Han Solo.

The details should have Star Wars fans rejoicing. When the announcement came, I found myself scrambling to tell all my co-workers the fantastic news. I’m ecstatic. This spring and summer has been loaded with news and information to fill even the most casual fan with jubilee.

With the near gag order put on any official discussion regarding the first anthology film, Star Wars: Rogue One, this should give people plenty to talk about the remainder of the summer.

Here’s what we know:

The father and son duo of Lawrence Kasdan (Raiders of the Lost Ark, Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi as well as The Force Awakens) and Jon Kasdan (The First Time and television series Dawson’s Creek and Freaks and Geeks) will be penning the screenplay with the duo of Chris Miller and Phil Lord (The LEGO MovieCloudy with a Chance of Meatballs21 Jump Street and 22 Jump Street) directing.

“We’re so excited to be working with Chris and Phil, who will bring a fresh new dimension to the Star Wars universe,” said the Kasdans. “They’re two of the smartest, funniest and most original filmmakers around, and the ideal choice to tell the story of Han Solo, one of the coolest characters in the galaxy.”

Miller and Lord spoke of the opportunity to direct a Star Wars film:

“This is the first film we’ve worked on that seems like a good idea to begin with. We promise to take risks, to give the audience a fresh experience, and we pledge ourselves to be faithful stewards of these characters who mean so much to us.”

Having the Kasdans writing this story means continuity. Lawrence had a hand in, arguably, the best film of the Star Wars saga. I have no doubt this story will benefit from his artistic touch. And having seen some of Miller and Lord’s work, I anticipate a fun filled, adventure that should stay true to form.

The movie will tell the story of how Han Solo became the smuggler we met in Star Wars: A New Hope. We know very little of the backstory behind one of the most iconic rogue figures in movie history. A scoundrel, nerf herder, smuggler and pirate who couldn’t pass up a good deal when it came his way, Han lived a roaming lifestyle virtually free from Empire rule. A movie telling the story of a young brash Han Solo is a dream come true.

I would love to see some of the supporting characters get some time, Chewbacca or Boba Fett, among others. Equally intriguing would be his relationship life. As we’ve recently been introduced through the comics, Han Solo was married. I would anticipate it to be a part of the story. There is a vast world to tap into and I expect the Kasdans to fill in the gaps.

The film is slated for a May 25, 2018 release, and will be executive produced by Lawrence Kasdan and Jason McGatlin and co-produced by Will Allegra.
