Chucky may be returning in the near future as MGM and Universal make a deal to produce a new Child’s Play film.

The remake has been in the works for several years and a script for the new film has already been written by Don Mancini, who created the Chucky character and has written all of the previous films in the horror series.

The production will start later this year and Brad Dourif is returning to voice Chucky. Where as the later films in the series had a more comedic tone, this remake/reboot returns to the darker origins of the original Child’s Play.

The Child’s Play series started off when the first film was released in 1988 and. It was directed by Tom Holland, who had previously directed Fright Night in 1985. In the film, a serial killer called Chucky transfers his soul into a talking doll and is unknowingly bought by a single mother for her son. Chucky then goes on a rampage in the typical slasher story way.

The film fared well at the box office and a string of sequels soon followed, with the most recent being 2004’s Seed of Chucky.

What are your thoughts on a potential reboot of the Child’s Play series? Is it even surprising, given that the last ten years has seen remakes and reboots of similar horror series such as Nightmare On Elm Street, Friday The 13th, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Halloween?
