These Resident Evil announcements just keep on coming. It was rumoured that Slant 6 Games (developers of the SOCOM series) were developing a new Resident Evil game and last week there was a Xbox Magazine seemingly detailed it. Today Capcom have confirmed this rumour.

Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City is in development for Playstation 3, Xbox 360 and PC. Slant 6 are indeed working on the game and it will be completely different to any previous games in the series. It’s a team based third person shooter that takes place during the outbreak of the T Virus in Raccoon City (as seen in Resident Evil 2,3 and the Outbreak series). Players will not only face zombies and BOWs (Bio Organic Weapons) but also rival squads.

You will play as an Umbrella Security Services (USS) soldier, who is part of a squad sent into the city to destroy any evidence and survivors that would expose Umbrella as being behind the outbreak. US Special Ops soldiers will try to stop you as they are sent in to expose your plans. You can either play alone or in four player co-op. There will also be some competitive online modes based on the conflict between the USS, US Special Ops and the zombies and BOWs.

Interestingly, you will be able to rewrite Resident Evil history. One example that Capcom use is that Leon Kennedy, star of Resident Evil 2, will be a target in the game. There will also be other retellings of moments from Resident Evil 2 and 3 from the perspective of the USS.

Finally, a demo of upcoming Nintendo 3DS title Resident Evil: Revelations will be included with Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D, and will see you playing as Jill on the ocean liner the game is set on.

Two Cents
I can’t say I have a real opinion on this until we start seeing screenshots and footage. While it’s nice to see Capcom trying something different with this game, I worry that it’s straying too far, especially if all of the horror elements are being replaced with nothing but shooting. Still, we don’t know whether Capcom are considering this as a main title or more like the Resident Evil Outbreak games a few years back. Online modes could be interesting if all of the Raccoon City scenarios constantly hanged in the balance and especially if you can play as BOWs. We’ve seen that kind of thing in Left 4 Dead, so it seems entirely possible that we could play as a hunter or a tyrant for example. To sum it up, not sure if want.
