Horror fans the world over have plenty of reason to rejoice this year! If you’re a horror geek like myself, then the Phantasm name itself means a lot. For years, the series has been a cult classic and favorite among horror and sci-fi fans, or Phans as the avid followers of the series are called. When the series left off in 1999 with the then highly anticpated fourth installment, Phantasm: OblIVion, many were sure it would be the closing chapter in the legacy of the Tall Man. However, there were even more questions raised. What seemed to many like an entry that would provide closure to the series really gave us no answers and just ended up leaving the Phans wanting more.

Angus Scrimm returns as the legendary Tall Man, at the age of 87!

With a projected release date of October 7th, 2014, we may finally get the answers that we have been looking for and some closure to the series with Phantasm: Ravager, the fifth entry in the series. For the first time since the beginning of the series, creator Don Coscarelli has opted to let someone else take over the directing duties. This time around, veteran Emmy Award winning director David Hartman takes the reins. While known more for his work in the animation world, David has previously worked with Coscarelli on other projects such as John Dies At The End and Bubba Ho-Tep.

Coscarelli has already promised that the fifth installment in the series will provide closure and supply us with more answers to the origins of the Tall Man. It will also continue the story of our hero Reggie (Reggie Bannister) hunting the mysterious, murderous mortician through his own world. This fifth entry seems like much of a reunion as well, bringing back the beloved cast from the first film including Angus Scrimm as our villain, Bill Thornbury, Michael Baldwin and Kathy Lester, the infamous Lady In Lavender. Whether or not this one will grace movie screens or go direct to DVD (like the last installment) remains to be seen. I’m personally hoping that it will be on the big screen.

I for one cannot wait for this one to come out and am counting down the days until I can finally see it for myself. For the moment though, we will just have this offical trailer to tide us over. From the looks of it, this one may be one of the most exciting entries in the series!

I will continue to keep everyone posted on the latest updates on this project. For more information, check out the official website.

For those in the L.A. area, there is a Phantasm reunion coming up at the Monsterpalooza convention in September from the 12th to the 14th. Coscarelli, Scrimm, Bannister, Thornbury, Baldwin and more are expected to be in attendance. I’m sure the good folks behind the Phantasm series will have many questions to answer during the Q and A and I plan on being there to get the inside scoop. Until then, “keep your balls in the air” as Don Coscarelli says!
