An Open Letter to DC Fans

Following the release of the Jason Momoa images portraying him as the king of Atlantis in Aquaman and with the release last week of Melissa Benoist in her Supergirl outfit I’m starting to notice a horrible terrible trend those in the DC fandom are perpetuating.

You are all complaining way too much.

I’m not your dad, I’m definitely not some crotchety old man, and I’m sure as hell not the type that thinks that he knows better than you. This is simply a letter to you, all of you in the DC fandom that think it’s ok to fansplain a series or show to death before it even comes out. C’mon people, we are living in a geek renaissance RIGHT NOW and most of you are too busy picking nits to see just how beautiful it is to be a fan right now.

DC fans may not be the ONLY group guilty of this but by CROM you are most assuredly the loudest and negative.

Let’s look at the facts here:

  • We have hours of DC/Vertigo based television shows each week in prime time slots with The Flash, Arrow, Gotham, Constantine, and iZombie (starting soon). There are pilots ordered for Lucifer and Preacher, and about five others in development right now including a version of Teen Titans, Static Shock, and DMZ. Let’s not even get into the rumors that the Arrow-verse might split off into an Atom show thanks to the amazing job that Brandon Routh has done as Ray Palmer on Arrow.
  • The DCU has completely thrashed the Marvel Universe when it comes to animated movies. Don’t get me wrong, I love Marvel stuff nearly as much as my beloved DC cartoons…however for every Hulk Vs we get there are easily 3 quality DC movies released. Just barely released in January we had Justice League: Throne of Atlantis and will subsequently see the release of Justice League: Gods and Monsters this year.
  • Not to be outdone by Marvel, DC has a full slate of movies headed our way starting with the Batman v Superman movie in 2016, a Suicide Squad (SERIOUSLY!) movie later that year. Then those are followed by a movie I can’t wait to see, Wonder Woman in 2017. Then we’ll see the first part of the Justice League formed that same year followed by the release of 4 other one-shot movies and a second part of Justice League. We’ll have at least one new DC live-action movie each year until 2020.
  • Even with all of that, ALL OF THAT, people are complaining about Aquaman and how he has tattoos or his damn hairstyle. People are griping that Supergirl looks like a cheerleader with an S on her chest or that she looks too old. When I hear complaints like this it hurts my poor geek heart.

You people forgot what utter garbage those that came before us had to live with. I feel happy that I’ve had a chance to watch SEVEN Batman live-action movies that came out in my lifetime (eight if you include the classic). There simply is no excuse for you to poo-poo the movies that haven’t even been made yet. Even if they were done and in the can, there should be no reason whatsoever to complain about the content therein unless you’ve actually SEEN it.

Quit dreading your fandom and embrace it. Who honestly gives a crap that Aquaman isn’t wearing his “Mermaid Man” outfit and has been redesigned? It worked for the X-Men and EVERY OTHER MARVEL VENTURE. Get off that high horse and just let the geek wash over you and for the love of Frank Miller quit complaining.
