Netflix Testing 4K Streaming

If you really wanted to, you could stream some 4K test footage via Netflix right now…if you’ve got the TV to handle it.

That might be a bit of a misnomer as there really isn’t an option for 4K as a selected resolution, the test footage should work if you have the tech to run it.

It’s no secret that Reed Hastings has been pushing for this service to be offered to the public for some time now and even teamed up with Samsung to show off at CES this past January. The company is shooting for a 2014 roll out of the service, but it’s currently unclear if they’ll reach just that.

Netflix’s CPO, Neil Hunt spoke with TheVerge a while back saying that:

“We expect to be delivering 4K within a year or two with at least some movies and then over time become an important source of 4K.”

The very first offering at 4K from Netflix would probably be House of Cards as David Fincher has been a champion of the format since it wasn announced. I can’t wait to see it in action myself, but only time will tell if the 4K resolution picks up steam in the market. One thing’s for sure, it needs to come down in price considerably. Soon my pet, soon.
