Movie Review: The Rite

So, for the first time in a long time, I got to actually see a movie on the weekend it came out. Unfortunately, that movie happened to be the Anthony Hopkins starred, The Rite.

I don’t normally review movies, but after seeing this one, I thought it might be best if I told you why you should avoid it. In a nutshell, it’s apparently a true story about a priest that goes to the Vatican for “Exorcism Training” because demonic possessions are up and well, someone has to get the demons out. Like any other for profit corporation the Vatican has to keep up with supply for the high demand. In comes the Priest guy who’s name I can’t remember, a skeptic of if God and the Devil even exist. Yes. I said that right, the priest doesn’t even know if he’s a believer. The movie is that convulsing.

The start of the movie is extremely slow, just following Mr. Mopy Priest around as he complains about how he doesn’t know what to do with his life. Even when he eventually gets to Rome, Hopkins can save this movie. Hopkins is supposed to be some super exorcist, I told my father in law that if he wasn’t carrying the movie, it was going to suck. I was right. I’m not sure if I was supposed to be scared during this movie, and I get scared easily. Usually to the point where I have problems sleeping at night. None of the weird exorcism scenes, or tense building scenes did anything to me, other than bore me. The best part was really at the very end, and this is a spoiler alert. Hopkins gets possessed by the demon Mr Mopey Preist has following him and when it reveals it’s name Hopkins does the whole arms spread out ‘BAAAAALLLLLL’. I laughed. As did the teenagers sitting behind me.

If you really need to go see a movie, don’t go to this one, it’s a waste of money, even as a streaming Netflix one.
