For the 2 of you that read this and say to yourself “Hey, I’m a person that enjoys visual novels”, it’s time to get excited because Mangagamer has released the second set of episodes of Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni in English. This set, known as Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni Kai, is the answer arc to the original set of bloody murders. What’s an answer arc, you ask? Higurashi is somewhat unique in that the game features two sets of episodes. The first set of episodes is four murder mysteries, all featured in the same setting with some plot details remaining the same. However, each episode has a wildly different outcome, and yet something seems to tie these stories together (It’s very difficult to explain without giving spoilers). Kai, which was just released, tells these same four stories but from a different point of view, explaining the story from another point of view, usually the criminal’s, while also revealing why and how these stories are tied together. This type of storytelling creates a unique experience that has made Higurashi so popular.

Until now, we’ve only had the first set of episodes translated into English. Now, with Mangagamer’s release of Kai, you can finally finish the series and see what happens… unless of course you watched the anime adaptation from 2007. Or read the manga (which I highly recommend, it’s one of my top favorite mangas of all time). You can pick up all four episodes in a bundle at Mangagamer, or each episode individually, if you so choose… but if you’re buying one, you’re probably buying them all.

Oh, and as aside, this release features the original art and not the updated art from the PS2 release. Personally I prefer the updated art, so you can check out this wikia page for more information on updating, if you so choose.
