Two big pieces of Gundam news have come out of the Gundam Big Expo event in Tokyo. Gundam Unicorn, which I talked about yesterday, has been confirmed as an OVA series. There will be six episodes, each one clocking in at fifty minutes. The series will have a simultaneous worldwide launch next spring, as confirmed by Bandai Visual. Gundam Unicorn will be released on DVD and Blu-ray and shown at events. The fact that Gundam Unicorn is an OVA is not surprising, and was in fact expected. This news means that there is still no announced Gundam TV series, which means we probably won’t see a new series this fall. Hit the jump to see the other major announcement from Gundam Big Expo.
The other big news from the expo is the announcement of a short film entitled Ring of Gundam. This film is being written and directed by Yoshiyuki Tomino, the original creator of the Gundam franchise. Kunio Okawara, mechanical designer for the original Mobile Suit Gundam, is creating the mechanical designs for the film, and Yoko Kanno (Macross Plus/Frontier, Cowboy Bebop, Visions of Escaflowne, Turn A Gundam) is composing the score. The film will be a mixture of CGI graphics and hand-drawn animation. Though we don’t have many details about Ring of Gundam, the prospect is very exciting. I am a huge fan of the original Mobile Suit Gundam, and having the original creator and designer working together on Ring of Gundam makes me incredibly excited for this film. There is no information on release dates or what regions Ring of Gundam will be presented in, but it sounds like it will be out sooner than later.
