It Begins – Comparing Tron Legacy to Avatar

People who frequent this site know already that I am an apologetic Avatard and will be that way for the rest of my life I’m sure. It’s much like how I’ll defend Dune and Tank Girl as being amazing movies. I will not stand, nor should any of you, to hear people (including movie critics) comparing one movie to the other. It’s just not fair.

It’s not fair to immediately place scrutiny on a movie that has yet to see the light of day by comparing it to one of the most successful sci-fi movies of all time. I fully expect Tron Legacy to make buckets and buckets of money because of both it’s release date and the repeat geek offenders like myself who will go over and over again to see it while they can.

My gripe about this method is that by saying the words “it’s like Avatar”, that you’re going to make a potential audience that hasn’t seen it pissed if they didn’t enjoy Avatar. Who knows, I may watch this new Tron and think that I preferred the original, but I’d never go so far as to say that it’s like anything, much less a movie so loaded as Avatar is when it comes to the sci-fi and geek fanbase…there were oodles of people out there who hated Avatar without even seeing it.

By making such frivolous comparisons, you do your readers and movie goers a disservice. Spend a few more minutes thinking of original thoughts and opinions besides the same tired similes of “it’s like ____, but with ____ instead of ____”, because the way I see it, the only way that you can compare the two is that they’re both science fiction, in 3D, coming out in December, and cost shitloads of money to make…that’s it.
