Hold onto your UT3, its gonna be a loooong ride.
Unreal Tournament, the popular multiplayer first person shooter and modder’s wet dream, is quickly approaching its 10th anniversary. In that time, they’ve released only 3 games in the main series (face it, UT2k4 was practically a UT2k3 patch). Will the series see a 4th one in time for its anniversary? Not so says Epic Games co-founder Tim Sweeney in an interview with G4TV:
“Unreal Tournament is certainly a major long-term priority but we’re planning not to release a major retail game in the series for several years. So we have that effort somewhat on hold while we work on a few other initiatives.”
Is the co-founder’s word not good enough for you? Here’s what Epic Games’ president Mike Capps had to say:
“We’ve got Unreal [Engine] 4 in production right now… it’s going to be in the next console generation – our rough guess is 2012 [to] 2018.”
I for one applaud Epic Games’ decision to hold off on the next iteration of Unreal Tournament. This is the modding community’s time to shine.
