BOOK REVIEW: The Girl from the Blood Coven by Brian Moreland
As AC/DC put it, “If you want blood, you got it.” Brian Moreland’s horror short story The Girl From The Blood Coven delivers a heart-pounding thriller with just enough mystery to whet your appetite for the follow-up novella, The Witching House.
So a blood-soaked girl walks into a bar…oh, you haven’t heard this one? Let me explain. The girl is Abigail Blackwood, a known member of a hippy commune in the woods. She claims that her entire family has been massacred. Lucky for her, Sheriff Keagan is there. He sets out to investigate the Blevins House, a place rumored to be the site of witchcraft and blood sacrifices. Is Abigail the victim or the killer? Keagan is about to find out.
Blood Coven reads like a walk through a haunted house: horrifying, and full of suspense. Moreland grabs readers by the throat from the start and doesn’t let go until the mind-blowing conclusion.
This is the first work of Moreland’s I’ve read and a great place to start for new readers. His writing is concise and visceral. In one sentence, he manages to create visuals that many writers struggle for pages to achieve.
However, I will say that if you are the politically correct type, you may be put off by the language. One boy is described as the local “retard.” Keep in mind that this story is primarily told from the point-of-view of a small town Sheriff. I thought the description helped to elaborate the setting. This is a backwoods, good ol’ boy town, a place where everyone knows each other by name and the local watering hole attracts the same faces every day.
Horror fans looking for strong writing, suspense, and a body count won’t be disappointed. Blood Coven reminded me of the indie found footage flick The Blair Witch Project (1999) in terms of setting and tension. Unlike Blair Witch, this story is fast-paced and unafraid to show us everything. All of the terror and none of the shaky cam.
I highly recommend this short read available for free download now from Samhain Publishing, Nook, and Amazon. Make sure that you have your copy of the follow-up novella The Witching House on hand because once you’ve finished Blood Coven, you’ll be hungry for the conclusion. I know I am.
