If you’ve watched any of the Ghost in the Shell anime series (not the feature films), and I mean any of them, I am certain that you’ve heard of the 44 year old singer who passed away on the 17th of January due to lung cancer.

Origa, originally named Ol’ga Yakovleva, a Russian who came to Japan in 1991 as part of a home-stay program was popularized in the west by performing the opening credits song “Inner Universe” for the first season of Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, which I’ll post below for you to hear. Due to her work on the GitS series, she became long time friends with composer Yoko Kanno, perhaps one of my favorite composers alive today (thanks to Macross Plus and Cowboy Bebop). All in all she recorded a grand total of 11 albums and was featured on an extensive list of soundtracks.

She will be missed.
