Chew #30 made waiting the two months for the next issue absolute torture. After a brush with death left our main character, Tony Chu, in intensive care, the Space Cakes arc switched focus of the entire series to his twin sister, Toni Chu. Sure, we fought it initially, but we really grew to like the character as she held her own in Tony’s place.
…then an evil cibopath with vampiresque powers snapped her neck.
Despite this fact, issue 31 serves as a great jumping on point for new readers. Tony Chu is back and pissed, ready to show that his sister did not die in vain. Along with its usual one-page summary of Tony’s digestive powers, we receive a great deal of backstory involving the death of his former wife and the events that led to his estrangement with his daughter. I must say, it was great to see Tony back in action after such a long hiatus.
If this is truly the beginning of the second half of Chew like they’ve been advertising it as, then I say bring it on.
